First cardiac catheter ablation for heart rhythm problems was performed by Dr. Melvin Scheinman in 1981 on a patient with refractory palpitations and heart failure due to atrial fibrillation. He used DC current to destroy the AV node, stopping fast and irregular pulses from the atria to the ventricles. The strategy still used today involves pacemaker implantation, and RF current is now used instead of DC current.
